A mixed Bag for the Amateur User
Comment:
A review of Corel's Paintshop Photo X3, is a little tough to make. It isn't so much because it is a bad software. It is more because it is tough to rate this for a target audience that is a little tough to read.
You see, Corel's software falls somewhere between the professionally oriented Photoshop by Adobe, which no other software has yet to match, and the more amateur oriented Adobe Photoshop Elements, which can get as simple as simple can get. With that regard, this seems to fall somewhere in the Lightroom category where the amateur and professional may find it usefl. Only, a real professional will prefer Lightroom or Photoshop CS# to this.
On the surface of things, the software appears very similar to Elements, although I can't say I have used Elements enough to know how similar it is. What I do know is that it has certain features that are not available in Elements while it lacks a lot of the features that make full blown Photoshop excel. Adjustment Layers, Full fledged Curve Adjustments, Scripts, etc are all here. It has a browser similar to Bridge or Picassa, but falls in the middle in terms of features. It doesn't function as fully as a DAM and lacks a real database. Loading the software brings up a browser that isn't unlike that in Bridge or Lightroom. Shortcuts to your "my pictures" and "my documents" folders are instantly available in its browser and adding shortcuts to other photos is easy. You are also given the opportunity to browse by folder, date, or tag, although the hierarchy isn't available like a full blown DAM may have. It doesn't have the flexibility to browse by other metadata like ISO, Film Speed, Camera, etc, which isn't terribly necessary, but if you are looking at X3 because Elements is a bit too limited, this could be a limit as well. If you need that capability, you'd probably go for Lightroom, Bibble, or Photoshop.
As a photo editor, the nice thing on X3 is that you have the option of two editors. There is an express editor, which is a very basic version of the full editor and similar to what you see in Elements basic editor or even the quick settings part of Lightroom. It doesn't do much and isn't worth the purchase on its own, but it can be good for a quick go through on your photos and adjustments for white balance. The full fledged editor is more like what you would find in Photoshop. However, one will find that its features are a bit more intuitive.
X3 seems to excel at giving the basic user the ability to make more advanced edits without the need for understanding the complicated methods full Photoshop makes or hiding features that may be available in Elements but not always easy to find. There are menu items in the editor that often do in one step what it may take many steps to do in Photoshop, and that is a good thing. One can argue that there is more power in Photoshop and its multistep methods (I don't disagree), but for the amateur user, there is rarely a need for those steps.
The biggest disadvantage I'd see for X3 is that it isn't a Photoshop Product. It is intuitive and seems like a nice software to use. Its adjustment layers, curves, cloning, noise reduction, etc are often as good and easier than those in Photoshop, but that doesn't make them easy (easier is relative). Therein lies the problem. As a beginning user with an Adobe product, it is easy to find websites, tutorials, books, etc to learn what you need to learn no matter how complicated the software itself may be. As a result, you end up learning what you need to with a little effort. On the contrary, the resources for X3 are much more limited. While X3 is easier to use, there are a lot of features that can be overwhelming, and the resources out there are far and few between (5 books showed up on Amazon for this software including the X1 and X2 versions).
Ultimately, I would suggest a user to look at trials of various software before committing to this or others. If you are considering and can afford the full on Photoshop, you might consider that first as there is little question that it is at the top of its class. If you are looking for Photoshop's features at a lower price point consider this in addition to Elements or even Lightroom (recognizing that Lightroom is more a of a global editor and DAM).
For myself, if X3 would have been available at its current feature-set, I probably would have chosen it first as Elements is too limited and Photoshop too pricey. Unfortunately, it wasn't available and I learned Photoshop and Lightroom (at a student price point) to function as I need. However, as time goes on and my needs for Photoshop diminish, I think I will stick with X3 and Lightroom to complete my DAM and editing suite and save the money that Photoshop requires for some better camera hardware.

The. Best. Image. Software. Ever.
Comment:
I know, I know... everyone has their favorite imaging software, but this one, through all its mascinations, has really stood the test of time and is still one of the best software packages ever. I had been buying versions of this product when it was still under the old Jasc cover, and have pitted it against other products (like Ulead) and it's STILL the best. Clearing the workspace is easy, manipulating photos is a breeze... it's intiuative, remembering what you need when you need it, and very user-friendly. Just the best.

Lots of tools, moderately difficult to use
Comment:
Keep in mind that this is the first high end photo editing software I have used so bear with me. This software installed easily and includes several different programs necessary to complete a wide range of actions (photo organization, editing, etc). While there is a basic level of things that can easily be accomplished by a novice, the higher end features of this software require a lot of time to learn. That is not necessarily a bad thing, but there it is. One other complaint is that this software is a bit clunky and slow. By that I mean it takes a while to open and moving between features can be a bit awkward. All in all this will allow you to do some amazing high end editing at a relatively low cost, but its not perfect.

Comment:
I was a little skeptical with this product because of some reviews I had read dated back in March of 2010 and YES indeed the trial version did crash a few times on Windows 7 but as soon as I installed the Full Version I order from Amazon I clicked on Update and it appears Corel has addressed the problems. The program has NOT crashed or hung up since I updated. Thank you Corel - I am glad I went ahead and bought the program. It is a great price compared to Adobe CS3 and has the same features as far as I can tell. One of the Big differences in PaintShop Pro 3 vs PS Pro 2 is Corel moved the Clarify feature to Effects/Black and White. I am still trying to figure out if I can Clarify my color images. I love PaintShop Pro 3 and highly recommend it.

Ugh!
Comment:
I am hardly a professional photographer, but take a lot of digital photographs, and need quick, easy ways to get them ready to print and/or share. Unfortunately, I struck out with this product.
The installation was slow. The scan to find all of the existing pictures on my hard drive took forever (and I don't have *that* many pictures) and really bogged down my computer. I had trouble using some of the features (or finding them). I struggled for what seemed like an hour just to get the first picture done, and thought it would speed up after that (learning curve and all). Unfortunately, the program seemed determine to slow down my computer, or crash it all together, leading me to eventually uninstall the program (slowly...).
So, I certainly don't recommend this program. Not user-friendly, not computer-friendly. All in all, a waste of my time and efforts. Ugh.
