Editorial Reviews:
The days of digital tape are over. Don't worry about reloading mini DVD discs either, because the age of hard drive recording is finally here. The JVC GZ-MG37 Everio camcorder features a 30 GB hard drive for recording seven hours of DVD movie-quality video--all in an unbelievably small and lightweight package. Now when you're on the go, all you have to bring is the camera--leave the tapes and recordable DVDs at home. The GZ-MG37 records in high-quality MPEG-2, the same format used for DVD movies. And because the camcorder employs a tapeless format, you can easily delete unwanted scenes, or instantaneously skip to the exact segment of footage you want to view--no fast forwarding or rewinding. The hard drive also makes it easy to edit your footage right on the camera. Just click on a thumbnail image displayed on the GZ-MG37's 2.7-inch widescreen color LCD monitor and watch your memories come to life. Choose the footage you want and quickly and easily rearrange it the way you want it. And, unlike tapes, there's no need to worry about accidentally recording over your most prized moments. Technology for keeping your footage safe and sound is also built into the GZ-MG37. To protect the hard disk drive from shocks and vibrations, Everio camcorders have a protective floating suspension system that effectively dampens vibrations through advanced polymer shock absorbers. There's also a motion sensor that automatically senses sudden acceleration and turns off the power to protect the hard disk drive even if the camera is dropped. With a 30 GB hard drive, you can record to your heart's content. The camera features four different recording modes that let you choose the best balance between quality and recording time. In the highest quality mode, "Ultra," you'll get seven hours of recording time at full DVD image quality (720 x 480/60i) and with full Dolby Digital audio. Meanwhile, choosing the lowest quality mode, called Eco mode, gives you a whopping 37 hours of recording time

Good camera, funny output format.
Comment:
The Everio camera takes nice video, and good stills, but the output format is a funny modified mpeg that puts the audio on a separate file which needs to be spliced back on to be viewed in anything but JVCs software making this camera a pain in the tail for Linux users. If you are a Windoze user I guess it's fine...

Not bad if you find a good deal
Comment:
Ok, so this isn't the highest quality camera on the market. But, it is light, easy to use, and has decent picture quality. If you've got the money, spulrge on a higher rated $600 camera or hold out until prices on hi def camcorders come down more. If you don't want to spend more than $400 or so, this is one of the best HDD cameras you can pick up.

I love This camera
It has excellent functions and a great definition. the only thing that I do not like is the night vision because it is very slow.

$600 should buy better customer service
Comment:
I received this product as a gift from my father for the birth of our first child. Within a month, the power/play/record switch began malfunctioning. It still works, but in order to turn the camera off, I have to leave it in the record position and close the viewer. Putting the camera in the OFF position actually drains the battery empty.
I sent it in to their service department just before the year was up. (Even though it broke right after I bought it, I was too busy with a newborn to get on it quickly). What I found out the hard way was that they warrantee their product ONLY FOR PARTS for the first year, and labor FOR ONLY 90 DAYS after purchase! They were willing to supply the $140 (!) part, but wanted to charge me $150 labor to fix it. So, in essence, their warranty really is only of value to you for the first 90 days. That's not a big vote of confidence on their own product!
I was very polite to them on the phone (I wouldn't want their job!), but nonetheless they were short and snooty (maybe something about living in los angeles?) Bottom line is that for $600 the camera shouldn't break in the first month and their customer service (once you actually get a live person) has much to be desired. I will be avoiding JVC for all future purchases. I have never taken the time to leave an on-line review for anything, but I feel this strongly about this.
(BTW, HD camcorder is handy, easy transfer to PC, not great video quality, battery good, their editing software bad).

Comment:
Hard drives are the only way to go for me now. I can't believe how much easier and more functional they are than external storage. It's completely change recording for me... more specifically changed the playback! Makes video clips easy to find and show and you can quickly and easily switch back to recording without having to find the end of tape. You never have to worry about recording over something accidentally and you don't get little pieces of old recording in the gaps between recording sessions!!! I highly recommend it!
